This Robin Williams line was on my mind at Port Aransas this past Thanksgiving weekend. The whole visit had a hallucinatory quality. Whether it was the weather, the winter light, the beauty of the beach--the sensation was of a moment suspended. I have never seen so many happy dogs along for the ride with their masters, skipping on their telescope leashes, turned loose to run free. Viszlas, toy Yorkies, Goldens and labs, mutts galore, boxers, poodles.
We were all there to celebrate Thanksgiving and to harvest the joy of the unexpected gentle sun. We were there, rich in quantities of idle time, feast foods, and safety, while killing was going on in Iraq, moms and dads and children of families likes us were dying.
And so the image of the crab trap is the weekend's badge of cruel beauty.
